BrLab – 10th Edition

10th Edition

BrLab held its tenth edition in November of 2020, with its program realized online as a safety measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, considering the necessary participation of professionals from different countries that make up our program and activities.

This edition included the event’s traditional workshops and meetings – BrLab Features, BrLab Audience Design, 3 Puertos Editing, Locarno Industry Academy, BrPlot, and Reach.

The 10th edition of BrLab was produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator.

Projeto Paradiso and the Programa Ibermedia were the sponsors of this edition, with master support from Globo Filmes and Vitrine Filmes, in addition to the Secretary of Culture of the Prefecture of the City of São Paulo, the British Government in Brazil, and the institutional support of the British Government in Brazil and the Consulate General of Israel.

It also featured collaborations with ABRA, API, BRAVI, Brazilian Content, APRO and the partnership of MUBI, 3 Puertos Cine, Locarno International Film Festival (Industry Academy Latin America), Festival Rencontres Cinémas d’Amérique Latine de Toulouse (Cinéma en Développement), PopUp Film Residency, Torino Film Lab, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, MediaXchange, Diáspora Conecta, Coletivo DAFB, C/as4atro, and Cesnik, Quintino, Salinas, Fittipaldi and Valério Advogados.

12 projects were selected, representing Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Over a period of thirty-five days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.

Attendees included Brazilian screenwriter and consultant Iana Cossoy Paro, Brazilian producer Paula Cosenza, and Cuban consultant and screenwriter Xênia Rivery.

There were also talks given by Anne Delseth, Gerardo Michelin, Marina Tarabay, and Paula Cosenza, among others.

Director of Australab, a platform that, among other initiatives, includes 3 Puertos Cine, in addition to developing actions to reflect on the circulation of independent cinema, such as the Industry Academy Chile-Locarno. For seven years, he was the programming director of the Toulouse Latin American Film Festival and a member of the selection committee of Cine en Construcción for the Toulouse and San Sebastián editions. He was also a programmer at FIC-Valdivia and, in addition, is a project delegate at the Center for Cinema and Creation, a space for promoting independent cinema in Chile.

Born in Paris, she graduated in Cultural Management from the University Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. She has always worked with cinema and was responsible for audiovisual training and qualification projects, support programs for new talents and co-production platforms, such as the Paris Project. Between 2013 and 2016, she worked at the French National Film Agency, the CNC, where she coordinated the international fund Aide aux Cinémas du Monde and launched the international distribution program ACM Distribution. She has lived in Rio de Janeiro for three years and works as a curator, translator and consultant.

Screenwriter and playwright, he is also a professor at the Academia Internacional de Cinema and Belas Artes. He won awards at the Paulínia Festival and the Brazilian Film Festival in Miami for the screenplay for “Depois do Almoço” (2010), a short film shown at the Berlin Film Festival. He also wrote the short film “Lia e o Anjo” (2013) and the documentary Anhangabaú da Feliz-Cidade for the Quadrennial of Scenic Architecture in Prague, the year Brazil won the Triga de Ouro. In Germany, he completed an artistic residency at the ZK/U Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik and presented the video installation “People Like You Appear To be Multiplyin” at the Berlin Art Week. In the theater, he wrote and directed the plays “Josefina Canta”, “Quando Eu Era Bonita” and “Mão e Pescoço”.

Director, screenwriter, actor and casting director. He has been the curator of Janela Internacional de Cinema do Recife since 2013. Between 2013 and 2016 he was the Communications Coordinator at Vitrine Filmes. He directed the short films “O Porteiro do Dia” (2016) and “Reforma” (2018), which premiered at the 51st Brasília Film Festival, where he received the awards for Best Actor and Best Screenplay, in addition to 12 other festival awards. He is currently writing the script for the feature films “Cosplay”, with which he participated in the 9th edition of BrLab, and “O Vale dos Homossexuais”, selected for Brasil CineMundi in 2020.

Fernanda De Capua created and directed the sitcom Insustentáveis, wrote the screenplays for the series A História Delas and Turma da Mônica – Origens, and the feature films A Suspeita and Virtuosas. She was a consultant for the scripts for Saudade Fez Morada Aqui Dentro, Gabriel e a Montanha, and for more than 20 projects in the Prodav 04 labs. Among her achievements as a producer, the films Sonhos de Peixe, Casa Grande and Quem Matou Eloá stand out.

Flavia Candida is a curator, filmmaker, and producer who graduated from the Cinema course at UFF (Federal Fluminense University), where she directed the short film O Metro Quadrado, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 35th Brasília Film Festival.

She began as a programmer in the late 1990s at Cine Arte UFF and coordinated the Brazilian University Film Festival for over 15 years.

She collaborates in the curation of festivals such as the Rio Film Festival, Vitória Film Festival, Brasília Film Festival, Zózimo Bulbul Black Cinema Meeting, São Paulo International Short Film Festival, and Mate Com Angu Festival. She also curated the Cabíria Festival Mulheres & Audiovisual and FIMCine 23, both dedicated to female protagonism.

She has produced exhibitions such as Arte da África Cinema and Pequenas Histórias da Vanguarda – Downtown New York. She selects projects for labs such as BrLab, ICUMAM Lab, and the Curta Cinema Project Lab, and was a tutor at Roteiros do Arrabalde. She was on the selection committee for the Göteborg Film Fund 2021.

Giovani Barros is a director and casting producer. He has directed short films that have been screened at several national and international festivals. His latest short film, Carne Fresca, won best short film at the Rio Film Festival, within the Première Brasil Novos Rumos section. He works as an assistant director on feature films and also as a casting producer for films, series, and soap operas. He has been a member of selection committees for the Espírito Santo State Department of Culture (SECULT-ES), Riofilme, and the curatorial team of the São Paulo International Short Film Festival.

She has developed series and feature films with the production companies Gullane Entretenimento, RT Features and Vermelho Profundo. She is the founder of Tertúlia Narrativa, an online platform for film scripts, storytelling and audiovisual narratives.

As a teacher, she has lectured in schools and universities, was an advisor for EICTV and coordinator of the International Film Academy. She is currently developing the projects “Los Superlimpios”, by Roberto Jaén, and “Chicharras”, by Luna Marán, a co-production between Costa Rica and Mexico. She has been at Nuevas Miradas EICTV – the only lab in Cuba for film projects in development – ​​since 2014, and from 2017 to 2019 she worked as a director. In 2021, María Carla is designing the Film Production Course for CIBEF (Ibero-American Center for Photography and Cinema). Among her productions, we can highlight “La Música de las Esferas” (Best Documentary and Best Production Award, Muestra Joven ICAIC 2018; Best Documentary Award at Recontres de Cinemas Martinique 2019); “La Opción Cero” (Hot Docs 2021, IDFA Luminous 2020); “Obra de Choque” (in production, with support from Ibermedia, Sundance, WCF and Aide aux Cinemas du Monde). Albertina Carri is a pivotal figure in contemporary Latin American cinema. She is known for her versatility in the genres and materials she explores. She has directed the films No quiero volver a casa, Los rubios, Géminis, La rabia, Cuatreros, Las hijas del fuego, and ¡Caigan las rosas blancas!, which have been screened at the Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Venice, San Sebastián, and Rotterdam film festivals, among many others. Carri’s work evolves as she develops her themes, resources, and methods. She reorganizes film footage, immersing herself in the power of sound and movement in audiovisual installations such as Cine puro, Punto impropio, and Animales puros. She also incorporates writing into her work, both poetry and prose. She has published Los rubios: Cartografía de una película, Retratos ciegos, Lo que aprendí de las bestias, Las poseas, and Cine vivo.

Born in Buenos Aires, she developed her professional career in Spain. From her production company Tic Tac she directed: “Polvo” (Julio Hernández Cordón, 2012), “Tralas luces” (Sandra Sánchez, 2011), “18 comidas” (Jorge Coira, 2010) and “¿Qué culpa tiene el tomate?” (ómnibus, 2009). She has also co-produced feature films such as “Agua fría de mar” (Paz Fábrega, 2010), among other titles. In 2014 she founded Setembro Cine, through which she co-produced internationally recognized films: “Neruda” (Pablo Larraín, 2016), “Princesita” (Marialy Rivas, 2017) and “Una mujer fantasia” (Sebastián Lelio, 2017). Specialized in international co-productions, he has worked with 15 countries on more than 20 films through Quijote Films. Among his most notable productions are Land and Shade by César Augusto Acevedo, winner of the Caméra d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival; The Settlers by Felipe Gálvez, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, winner of the FIPRESCI Prize and Chile’s submission for the 2023 Academy Awards; The Blue Trail (2025) by Gabriel Mascaro, which competed in the official section of the Berlinale and won the Silver Bear; and his most recent production, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo by Diego Céspedes, awarded the Grand Prix of Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, the FIPRESCI Prize at the Brussels Film Festival, and selected as Chile’s submission for the 2026 Academy Awards and Goya Awards.

In 2020 she was selected to participate in the Locarno Industry Academy – Panama.
