CoLab, BrLab and LatAm Cinema launch mapping of audiovisual laboratories in Latin America and the Caribbean
With the aim of understanding the current situation and the challenges faced by audiovisual laboratories in Latin America and the Caribbean, CoLab, BrLab and LatAm Cinema launched a mapping of laboratories in these regions. The initiative comes after the first CoLab meeting held last September, which served to promote the creation of a Latin American network of audiovisual laboratories.
The organizers of this initiative invite all laboratories – understood as spaces in the region that seek to promote, develop, guide and strengthen audiovisual projects without distinction of genres or formats – to fill out the online form available here link up to 10 December 2021. The objective of the form, which takes around 10 minutes to complete, is to learn about the activities, methodologies and pedagogical practices used, as well as the profile of the tutors, the prizes they award and the sources of funding.
After collecting the information and its subsequent analysis, the main conclusions of the mapping will be presented during the second CoLab Meeting will take place in March 2022, within the scope of Encuentros BioBioCine, in Chile. The research will also serve as input for the design of activities to support the strengthening, joint work and professionalization of these spaces.
Convened by BrLab, the inaugural edition of CoLab brought together representatives from 26 laboratories to exchange experiences and consolidate collaborative ties with the aim of articulating a community of audiovisual laboratories in the region. Amanda Soprani is a Creative Producer and partner at Veleiro Azul Filmes. Her work includes writing and developing audiovisual projects, having coordinated the development phase of several feature-length, short and series projects, such as “A Mesma Parte de um Homem” (dir. Ana Johann), “Deserto Particular” (dir. Aly Muritiba) and “Foram os Sussurros que me Mataram” (dir. Arthur Tuoto). She is the Producer and Curator of CURITIBAlab, Olhar de Cinema’s first feature-length film development laboratory.
André Araujo

André Araujo is a Cultural Producer graduated from the Federal University of Bahia, with a master’s degree and a PhD in Culture and Society from the same institution. He is a researcher in the area of Cultural Economics, with a focus on the audiovisual sector. He has experience in the areas of cultural management and policies, communication consultancy and audiovisual production, especially in the direction of short documentaries. He is a member of the general coordination of Nordeste LAB – a platform for coordination and promotion that has been holding a market event in the city of Salvador-BA since 2015, in addition to training and sector coordination actions. He also coordinates the Bahian Audiovisual Observatory, a project that gathers data on the sector at a local level.

Screenwriter and script consultant graduated from EICTV (Cuba) and studied at Concordia University (Canada). She participated in the Talent Campus in Guadalajara and Bafici, the Docs Accelerator at HotDocs and the Taller Andino at Ibermedia. Her script “O Homem Descalço” won the Script Festival in 2014. She worked on the development of several transmedia projects for TV Globo, where she was also an analyst for film and series projects. She was a mentor at the Paradiso Incubator. She is an associate producer at FRAPA.
Carla Esmeralda

Carla Esmeralda has been the creator and producer of scriptwriting labs in Brazil since 1996. She has organized several events to develop Brazilian audiovisual production and to bring it closer to the international market. She is the director of the International Children’s Film Festival, together with Carla Camurati (since 2003). She created, in partnership with Bravi, the Rio Content Market (from 2011 to 2017). In 2018, she co-produced the documentary “A Última Abolição”, by Alice Gomes, with Gávea Filmes.
Cheo Poggy

Cheo Poggy is an actor, filmmaker, photographer and social communicator, a member of the FestiCineGye foundation since 2015, and currently works as Head of Communications for the Guayaquil International Film Festival. He is the founder of Overloaded Producciones, a film production and direction company, responsible for several Ecuadorian audiovisual works.
He has been a scriptwriting coach at the “Guayaquil Lab” scriptwriting laboratory of the FestiCineGye Foundation since 2018. He is the screenwriter and director of the short film: “Mentalmente” in 2014, which was officially selected at the “Havana New Latin American Cinema Festival”, Cuba, and officially selected at the “Manabí Profundo” Film Festival in Manta, Ecuador. Screenwriter and director of the short film: “Caballeros” in 2015, which was an official selection at the LGBTIQ+ Film Festival “El lugar sin límites” in Quito, Ecuador and an official selection at the Barcelona Gay and Lesbian Film Festival FICGLB, Spain in 2016. In 2017, he wrote and directed the short film “Sentido Común” which was an official selection at the LGBTIQ+ Film Festival “El lugar sin límites” in Quito, the same year.
In 2018, he directed his first feature film called “Sueño Americano”, a script by Raúl Zambrano, currently in post-production.
He is the screenwriter and director of the short film “La fiesta de los ratón” filmed in Guayaquil in 2019, which will be released soon.

Franklin Briones is a screenwriter, producer and film director. He holds a degree in Audiovisual Arts from the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil. He is a University Professor of Audiovisual and Film Production. He holds a degree in Cinema, Subject and Society from the National School of Experimentation and Film Production in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His career has been closely linked to the interdisciplinary dialogue between theater and cinema, making him an artist with a strong focus on theatrical dramaturgy and the construction of characters in both arts. Briones constantly produces independent film productions, where he is the author of the text and directs the actors in the same way.

He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Audiovisual Script Creation at the University of La Rioja and another in Advanced Studies of Spanish and Latin American Literature at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Director of Renacer Films since 2008 and of the Guayaquil International Film Festival since 2015. President of the FestiCineGye Foundation since 2018. Winner of the Inspiration Award at the Miami International Film Festival, Honorable Mention at the West Hollywood International Film Festival, California. The official selection of festivals such as Cannes and his filmography consists of one hundred short films and approximately ten feature films, including his own and external projects, as a filmmaker and actor. In 2021 he published his first book by ITA Editorial, Colombia, entitled Algún día túras abarras These Writings, part of the anthology Palabras Poéticas. Professor of History of Cinema and Television at the ITV Institute of Television since 2016 in Guayaquil, Ecuador and director of the Guayaquil Laboratory.

Leo Garcia is a screenwriter and partner at the production company Coelho Voador. He is the general director of FRAPA, the largest screenwriting festival in Latin America. A graduate of the Veritas University Film and TV School and the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and Television School, specializing in Production, she began developing independent projects in 2014, participating in spaces such as CinergiaLab, Morelia Lab, and the 3rd Ibermedia Workshop for Central American and Caribbean Film Projects. In 2015, she produced the documentary short film “Motriz,” which was an official selection at IDFA 2016 in the IDFA Competition for Student Documentary section. She is the producer of the project “Con poesía,” winner for Guatemala at the 6th Edition of the DOCTV Latin America Program (2017). She has served as the Training and Industry Coordinator for the Costa Rica International Film Festival from its sixth to ninth edition. Her second feature-length documentary, I Will Advance So Slowly (It Will Seem Like I’m Going Backwards), which has earned her participation in venues such as the 5th Central American and Caribbean Film Projects Workshop of the Ibermedia Program, the Nuevas Miradas Networking Platform, and the 13th Co-production Meeting in Guadalajara, had its world premiere at IDFA 2019. She is currently developing training projects for film projects between Costa Rica and Guatemala. In 2021, she began working at the Costa Rican Film Production Center as coordinator of the national fund El Fauno.
Mariah Benaglia

Mariah Benaglia holds a degree in Social Communication, with a specialization in Public Relations, from the Federal University of Paraíba. She has worked in the areas of production and management of cultural projects since 2006. She has participated as a producer, director and actress in dozens of audiovisual productions in Paraíba. Between 2014/2015, she assumed the position of Operational Manager of Audiovisual Dissemination at the Secretariat of State for Culture of Paraíba (SECULT/PB). She produced O Nó do Diabo (2017 – premiere at the 50th Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema) and A Noite Amarela (2019 – premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival), both feature films produced by Vermelho Profundo. In 2017, she founded her production company: Electra Filmes. She is currently a tutor at W.R_Lab, a laboratory for the development of fiction feature films promoted by the Cultural Foundation of João Pessoa/PB – FUNJOPE.

He is responsible for the Management of the Audiovisual Division of the João Pessoa Cultural Foundation/FUNJOPE, Artistic Director of the Walfredo Rodriguez Film Festival and Coordination of W.R_Lab, a public policy focused on the development of audiovisual projects. Director of BrLab, producer, curator and founding partner of the production company Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual. He has worked as a programmer in cultural spaces such as MIS-SP, Cinemateca Brasileira and Cine Olido, in addition to having produced and programmed numerous exhibitions and festivals. He works as a coordinator of courses and training platforms, such as the Prodav 04 Project Development Laboratories for ANCINE/FSA, in addition to BrLab, which he created and has directed since 2011. Through Klaxon, he produced and co-produced the films Sobre Rodas (2017), by Mauro D’Addio; Diz a Ela que me Viu Chorar (2019), by Maíra Bühler; and co-produced the films Contactado (2020), by Marité Ugás; Fiebre (2022), by Elisa Eliash, Zafari (2024), by Mariana Rondón, among others.

Rodrigo Antonio is a historian and audiovisual producer from Pará. He has produced feature-length and short fiction and documentary films with an international career and recognition, web series, educational documentaries and a television series. He has experience as a curator and reviewer for laboratories, sectoral notices and market spaces. He develops studies and consultancies for production with social impact, is the creator and coordinator of Matapi-Mercado Audiovisual do Norte and executive president of the Association of Black Audiovisual Professionals – APAN.

Rodrigo de Oliveira is a director, screenwriter and editor. Winner of the Grand Prize of Brazilian Cinema for the documentary “Todos os Paulos do Mundo”, he also directed the feature films “As Horas Vulgares” and “Teobaldo Morto, Romeu Exilado”, as well as several short films. In April 2021, the Cinemateca of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-Rio) held a complete retrospective of his work. He is currently working on the finalization of his fourth feature film, the fiction “Os Primeiros Soldados”.

Tatiana Canro

She has a degree in Audiovisual Media from the “Universidad de los Andes” (Venezuela). She studied Executive Production and Transmedia Narrative at the International School of Film and TV of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV), and community documentary at “Televisión Serrana” – Sierra Maestra-Cuba. Her audiovisual creations are part of the online video library of important film festivals around the world and have been exhibited by television stations and web platforms in different countries, including UNESCO and Cubainformación TV. She has been part of the evaluation committee of the Colombian Film Development Fund and has been a jury member at different film festivals. She was in charge of four editions of the Under Film Festival “1000 meters underground” Venezuela, a project with venues in Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico and Spain. Since 2014, she has directed the Foundation and Audiovisual Production Company “Cine en Las Aldeas”, which has venues in Colombia and Venezuela. Since 2017, she has been developing “Proyecto Filma” (from Cartagena de Indias), which has held editions of the “Filma LGBTI”, “Filma Mujer” and “Filma Afro” laboratories, together with national and international allies. She is also currently the Coordinator of Academic Outreach and International Outreach at the Specialized School of Film Faculty in Mexico City.

He has been in charge of the production department of the Florianópolis Audiovisual Mercosul International Film Festival – FAM 25 for over 10 years. He also coordinates the Mercosul Co-Production Meeting – ECM+LAB. Director of Muringa Produções Audiovisuais, he is also an executive and finishing producer and one of the main editors and editing consultants in Santa Catarina, with nine feature films and 25 short films under his belt, including national and international projects, such as the series “Mata Selvagem”, directed by Iñaki Echeberría, filmed in the Triple Frontier, a co-production between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
