BrLab is an annual workshop dedicated to future Latin American and European films undergoing development stages and to the training of professionals in the audiovisual sector. Currently, it is the only market event in Brazil that receives projects from all over Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula (and Italy).
During the laboratory, film producers, directors and screenwriters representing the twelve selected projects receive comprehensive advice on fundamental pillars of development for their products: screenwriting, direction, production and distribution. The workshop has an important history of successful films released in Brazil and abroad and has consolidated itself in recent years as an international reference in the film industry.
The 10th edition of BrLab takes place on November 5-27, 2020, with a fully online programming as a security measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, given that the participation of professionals from different countries in our programming and activities is essential.

One of the most challenging subjects for the independent cinema industry in the past decade is the digital environment. With the arrival and consolidation of the internet, new platforms of streaming films were created and soon became giants in the industry, not only while exhibiting films and series, but also producing content. At the same time, piracy has rapidly become a window of exhibition for users seeking for content they don’t find in cinemas or the latest video stores. While Netflix, Amazon and others are widely spread and commonly recognized as synonyms of VOD, platforms such as MUBI are in the market for more than 10 years trying to create a space for independent arthouse cinema, and nowadays, more and more solutions are created based in niche audiences, such as Kabinett, Spamflix and many more.

Contemporary cinema has been proposing increasingly diverse production formats. These new work proposals result from close dialogues within the teams of each film. The direction of photography is a fundamental part of this invention, assuming the role of a structuring dialogue between the needs of the direction and production. This panel will debate, from the different perspectives of members of the collective Dafb who work on different cinematography fronts in the audiovisual industry, the creative and technical reading of a script as a project planning tool for decision making, even before pre-production. Together, they will talk about how to anticipate, based on the project, the specific needs of each film with regard to the formation of camera, electrical and grip crews, in addition to foreseeing, for each department, the types of equipment that may be favorable, disposable or essential, including on after-set stages, until post production.

Every exhibitor across the globe is dealing with the fallout of Covid-19 and the predominance of studio productions, which are rapidly being withdrawn from release schedules. As distributors pivot to look at their online and digital business, what can we do to attract customers to our bespoke platforms and how do we ensure the survival of arthouse films? During this discussion, Kate Gerova and Lee Shelton will look at the digital customer journey. We will focus on the application of user-centric design and the use of data in order to create product longevity. We will also explore how strategic partnerships with exhibitors and influencers can reach an audience who might feel starved of new content, as well as discuss how creative CRM, targeted social advertising, adwords and effective remarketing can ensure they return time and again.

In recent years, while Brazilian cinema has been suffering the consequences of structural changes in policies aimed at the audiovisual industry, paradoxically, the country's production is being celebrated around the world in important film festivals and markets. In light of this scenario, where all the main class entities of the Brazilian audiovisual industry are striving to prevent an even greater crisis in the sector, we invite exhibitor Adhemar Oliveira, producer Sara Silveira and filmmaker Eryk Rocha to talk about Brazilian cinema today, moderated by producer Ivan Melo. What are the perspectives for Brazilian cinema in 2020? How to face the current crisis? Who is interested in Brazilian cinema? Who are the audiences of Brazilian cinema?

The work of a festival programmer is often seen as a job that any cinephile would love to do – to discover films, create an identity through which a festival will present itself to a certain audience –, and festivals are definitely a space for the plurality of voices and artistic freedom. However, there are many challenges in the day-to-day of a programmer, not only in terms of the nature of the job itself (which is often a free-lance job, that must be combined with other works in the industry), but also in terms of the struggle to find new films and points of views, the need to deal with important matters such as representativeness, innovative ways of filming, new technologies etc. Anne Delseth, Susana Rodrigues e Cecilia Barrionuevo, three women with large experience in the field, will talk about these challenges. The professionals work as programmers at festivals such as Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, Rotterdam and Mar del Plata, among others.

Argentinian filmmaker, screenwriter and producer Albertina Carri presents some of her current reflections on the poetics of bodies in cinema, at a time when our bodies represent vital potentials. Based on the understanding of cinema as something organic, the director of the award-winning films Las Hijas del Fuego, Los Rubios, La Rabia, among others, draws on concepts of philosophy, psychoanalysis and image analysis to investigate some of the questions that philosophy has been formulating since pre-Socratic times, and psychology since its beginning. What is a body? What can a body do? The responses vary according to the epistemological system used to formulate the response. Albertina proposes an approach to Spinoza’s system, which she will use to think of the possibilities of the body and cinema as tools for manifestation of the sacred based on our purely profane nature.

An important portion of fiction currently produced in Brazil centers on bodies, spaces and accents from different Brazilian states and regions, and makes use of a hybrid language that is increasingly recurrent in cinema, in which fiction and documentary are often mixed in the narrative. Along this line, more and more screenwriters and filmmakers move between the two genres. What are the criteria adopted by filmmakers when opting for a documentary or fictional process?

This master class is for writers, directors, producers, distributors and all those film professionals who want to set out together to explore their stories and potential audiences through a collaborative and iteractive process (and artistic research practice) from an early stage of development.

Cinéma en Développement is a space designed for European and Latin American professionals to meet, without constituting a market. The goal of this platform is to promote an interchange between professionals in search of talents and projects, and directors and producers who are developing their films and wish to strengthen their network.
