Sandra returns to her cousin Mariana’s house in search of a photograph of her deceased mother, who worked there as a live-in housekeeper for Mariana’s parents. Although they were raised together, Sandra, who is dark-skinned, and Mariana, who is light-skinned, experienced that house in vastly different ways. As they reconnect, long-buried memories begin to take shape around them. Ghosts of childhood, ancestry, and a love that never completely left.
Additional Information
In 2017, the film won three BrLab awards: the Vitrine Filmes Development Award, the FiGa Films Acquisition Award, and the Cinéma en Développement Award. Later, in 2019, it participated in the Audience Design workshop with TorinoFilmLab, and in 2024, it participated in the Rough Cut workshop.
In 2025, Sistermaids participated in the Marché du Film in Cannes, as part of the Brazilian delegation in the Goes to Cannes. It was selected for the Premiere Brasil – New Paths at the Festival do Rio and won the Audience Award for Best Brazilian Fiction Film at the 49th São Paulo International Film Festival.
