BrLab held its ninth edition in October of 2019. This edition included a total of 6 workshops and meetings – BrLab Features, Audience Design Workshop, BrLab Rough Cut, Locarno Industry Academy, BrPlot, and, for the first time, Reach, the first international meeting on questions of audience and public in the audiovisual market, which was held in partnership with Projeto Paradiso.
There were more than 110 guests, including participants, mentors, speakers, and players from the different sections. Furthermore, the book with the screenplay of the film Que Hora Ela Volta?, directed by Anna Muylaert, was published by BrLab‘s publishing label.
There was also a special screening held of the award-winning Portuguese-Brazilian co-production O Ornitólogo, followed by a talkback with the acclaimed Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues and the film’s screenwriter and art director, João Rui Guerra da Mata. This activity took place in partnership with the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) and the Consulate of Portugal in São Paulo.
The 9th edition of BrLab was sponsored by ANCINE, BRDE, and FSA – Audiovisual Sector Fund, with co-realization by Spcine, the Secretary of Culture of the Prefecture of the City of São Paulo and Projeto Paradiso, and with co-sponsorship from the Programa Ibermedia. It was produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator.
It featured master support from Your Mama, Vitrine Filmes, Globo Filmes, and Espaço Itaú de Cinema; support from SESC-SP, Canal Brasil, Sofá Digital, Cinemateca Brasileira, AIC – International Film Academy, API – the Brazilian Association of Independent Audiovisual Producers, among others; and partnerships with 3 Puertos Cine, Locarno Industry Academy International, TorinoFilmLab, Cinéma en Développement, Pop Up Film Residency, and Tribeca Film Institute.
12 projects were selected, representing Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico (USA), and the Dominican Republic.
Over a period of seven days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.
Attendees included Argentine producer Agustina Llambi Campbell, Chilean producer Giancarlo Nasi, Brazilian screenwriter and consultant Iana Cossoy Paro, Brazilian director and screenwriter Marcelo Gomes, Venezuelan filmmaker Mariana Rondón, and Mexican consultant and producer Paula Astorga.
There were also talks given by Dag Hoel, Felipe Lopes, Gerardo Michelin, and Juliette Lepoutre, among others.
