7th Edition

BrLab held its seventh edition in October of 2017, in co-realization with Spcine, the São Paulo Municipal Secretary of Culture, and SESC-SP.

In this edition, BrPlot, a new arm of BrLab’s open panel program dedicated exclusively to audiovisual writing and narrative, and the Audience Design workshop, in partnership with TorinoFilmLab, were inaugurated. In the Audience Design workshop, the representatives of three Brazilian film projects in advanced development were able to reflect on and build strategies for the identification and engagement of their future films’ audiences.

The 7th edition of BrLab was sponsored by Oi Futuro via ProAC ICMS, with institutional support from ANCINE – Brazilian Film Agency, São Paulo International Film Festival, and the Instituto Cervantes. It was produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator.

It also included partnerships with various collaborators, such as Cinema do Brasil, the French Consulate General, the Institut Français, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, FiGa Films, Vitrine Filmes, Cinéma en Développement, Tribeca Film Institute, RECAM, Revista de Cinema, LatAm Cinema, FAAP, ABRA – Brazilian Association of Screenwriters, TorinoFilmLab, the Consulate General of Israel, Canal Brasil, the Cinemateca Brasileira, and Espaço Itaú de Cinema.

12 projects were selected, representing Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Portugal.

Over a period of seven days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.

Attendees included Argentine producer Agustina Llambi Campbell, consultant and screenwriter Eliseo Altunaga, Argentine producer Fernanda del Nido, Chilean producer Giancarlo Nasi, Brazilian screenwriter and consultant Iana Cossoy Paro, Brazilian filmmaker Juliana Rojas, Venezuelan filmmaker Mariana Rondón, French-Argentine consultant and screenwriter Miguel Machalski, and Mexican consultant and producer Paula Astorga.

There were also talks given by Anna Muylaert, Gerardo Michelin, and Juliette Lepoutre, among others.

Carol Rodrigues graduated in Social Sciences and Cinema. After she took a film specialization course at the New York Film Academy. In 2015, she directed the short film “The Doll and the Silence” and in 2019, two more shorts “Their Happiness” and “Mother Doesn’t Cry”. The films have participated in several national and international festivals, winning the Best Short Award elected by the public of FESTin in Lisbon, the Best Short Awards elected by the Jury and the Audience of the Entertodos. As a screenwriter she participated in the team of the “School of Genius” series by Gloob, and in the third season of 3% by Netflix. Now she is actively dedicated to the project “Made to be maids”, her first fiction feature film. The film is in the final stretch of development to begin production in partnership with Canal Brasil and Vitrine Filmes.

Audience Design is a strategic and dynamic holistic process, specifically adapted to each project, which aims to ensure the best possible distribution of a film targeting its audience. It is an approach based in narrative and experimentation.

Founder and co-director of Pacifica Grey, a project focused on the production, distribution and exhibition of alternative independent cinema in Central America, which brings to the region the work of such luminaries as Ruben Östlund, Agnès Varda and Jim Jarmusch. Marcelo combined this task with cultural management, advising the development of training and industry spaces for the Cinergia Fund. He was artistic director of the Costa Rica International Film Festival from 2015 to 2017, and currently works as programming advisor for the IDFA Festival, in addition to collaborating as a tutor for institutions such as Torino Film Lab and Locarno Filmmakers Academy. Flavia Candida is a curator, filmmaker, and producer who graduated from the Cinema course at UFF (Federal Fluminense University), where she directed the short film O Metro Quadrado, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 35th Brasília Film Festival.

She began as a programmer in the late 1990s at Cine Arte UFF and coordinated the Brazilian University Film Festival for over 15 years.

She collaborates in the curation of festivals such as the Rio Film Festival, Vitória Film Festival, Brasília Film Festival, Zózimo Bulbul Black Cinema Meeting, São Paulo International Short Film Festival, and Mate Com Angu Festival. She also curated the Cabíria Festival Mulheres & Audiovisual and FIMCine 23, both dedicated to female protagonism.

She has produced exhibitions such as Arte da África Cinema and Pequenas Histórias da Vanguarda – Downtown New York. She selects projects for labs such as BrLab, ICUMAM Lab, and the Curta Cinema Project Lab, and was a tutor at Roteiros do Arrabalde. She was on the selection committee for the Göteborg Film Fund 2021.

Francine Barbosa is a screenwriter. In the film industry, she was part of the screenwriting teams for the feature film “A Cidade Aqui Dentro”, directed by Matias Mariani, and for Dea Ferraz’s third feature film, “Castela” (currently being financed). The script for the feature film “Azul Violeta”, written with Maurilio Martins, was selected for development by PRODAV FSA 05/2016. In television, she was a screenwriter for the series “A Revolta dos Malês” and developed serial projects for several production companies. She has participated in selection committees for audiovisual projects such as ProAC-SP and the Ministry of Culture, as well as short film festivals. She has been a screenwriting teacher since 2015.

Her short film Ser o que se é (2018) became a digital phenomenon with 5 million views in one month. On TV, she directed episodes of the children’s series Julie e os fantasmas, winner of the 2011 APCA and nominated for the 2012 International Emmy Awards; and of Pasionais (2014), broadcast on Globosat.

He holds a postgraduate degree in Administration of Cultural and Creative Organizations from the University of Buenos Aires, a degree in Cinema from FAAP and a specialization in Psychoanalytic Semiotics from PUC-SP. He has worked in the production of films directed by Hector Babenco, Tizuka Yamasaki and Guilherme de Almeida Prado, and since 2002 has produced the International Film Festival in São Paulo. He has also had brief stints in theater and publishing, as well as in short documentaries. His short film Hibakusha: Herdeiros Atômicos no Brasil was one of the winners of the Prêmio Estímulo in 2005 and won an award at É Tudo Verdade in 2007.

Director of BrLab, producer, curator and founding partner of the production company Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual. He has worked as a programmer in cultural spaces such as MIS-SP, Cinemateca Brasileira and Cine Olido, in addition to having produced and programmed numerous exhibitions and festivals. He works as a coordinator of courses and training platforms, such as the Prodav 04 Project Development Laboratories for ANCINE/FSA, in addition to BrLab, which he created and has directed since 2011. Through Klaxon, he produced and co-produced the films Sobre Rodas (2017), by Mauro D’Addio; Diz a Ela que me Viu Chorar (2019), by Maíra Bühler; and co-produced the films Contactado (2020), by Marité Ugás; Fiebre (2022), by Elisa Eliash, Zafari (2024), by Mariana Rondón, among others.
