BrLab – 5th Edition

5th Edition

BrLab held its fifth edition in October and November of 2015. This edition included the event’s traditional workshop – BrLab Features.

The 5th edition of BrLab was produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual, the Ministry of Culture, and the Federal Government, and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator, with co-realization by Spcine and the City Hall of São Paulo.

It had the institutional support of the São Paulo International Film Festival and ANCINE, and the support of Cinema do Brasil, Vitrine Filmes, FiGa/Br, Centro Cultural b_arco, Consejo Nacional de Cinematografía del Ecuador, Lobo Lab, Cine Latino, Cinéma en Développement, Latam Cinema, Recam, FIDLab, and SUBTITULOS.TV.

12 projects were selected, representing Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Portugal.

Over a period of seven days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.

Attendees included Cuban consultant and screenwriter Eliseo Altunaga, screenwriter, director, and producer Fernanda de Capua, and director and screenwriter Juliana Rojas, among others.

There were also talks given by Juliana Vicente, Maria Carlota Bruno, Geraldine Chaplin, and Barbara Sturm, among others.

Fernanda De Capua created and directed the sitcom Insustentáveis, wrote the screenplays for the series A História Delas and Turma da Mônica – Origens, and the feature films A Suspeita and Virtuosas. She was a consultant for the scripts for Saudade Fez Morada Aqui Dentro, Gabriel e a Montanha, and for more than 20 projects in the Prodav 04 labs. Among her achievements as a producer, the films Sonhos de Peixe, Casa Grande and Quem Matou Eloá stand out.

Estrela Straus is a Brazilian actress and director. She studied film at FAAP, in Brazil; at EICTV, in Cuba; and at Universidad del Cine, in Argentina. As an actress, she graduated from the Lee Strasberg Film and Theatre Institute in New York; at CPT, in São Paulo; and with Augusto Fernandes and Agustín Alezzo, in Buenos Aires. She studied dramaturgy with Mauricio Kartun. She was a teacher at Teatro Escola Célia Helena. She acted in plays, short films and series in Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Germany and the United States. She directed the plays Fracture, in Berlin, and Vanities, in New York. She directed the short films My favorite things or Liberdade and Fim.

Flavia Candida is a curator, filmmaker, and producer who graduated from the Cinema course at UFF (Federal Fluminense University), where she directed the short film O Metro Quadrado, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 35th Brasília Film Festival.

She began as a programmer in the late 1990s at Cine Arte UFF and coordinated the Brazilian University Film Festival for over 15 years.

She collaborates in the curation of festivals such as the Rio Film Festival, Vitória Film Festival, Brasília Film Festival, Zózimo Bulbul Black Cinema Meeting, São Paulo International Short Film Festival, and Mate Com Angu Festival. She also curated the Cabíria Festival Mulheres & Audiovisual and FIMCine 23, both dedicated to female protagonism.

She has produced exhibitions such as Arte da África Cinema and Pequenas Histórias da Vanguarda – Downtown New York. She selects projects for labs such as BrLab, ICUMAM Lab, and the Curta Cinema Project Lab, and was a tutor at Roteiros do Arrabalde. She was on the selection committee for the Göteborg Film Fund 2021.

Producer, distributor and director, based in Buenos Aires. He produced Todos mienten y Rosalinda, by Matías Piñeiro, and Accidentes gloriosos, by Mauro Andrizzi and Marcus Lindeen, which won an award at Venice in 2011. In 2012, he began a close relationship with Brazil. Soon after, he began developing a project co-directed by Michael Wahrmann and Diego Lerer, Donde mueren los elefantes. He premiered more than six independent Brazilian films in Argentina in 2014 and 2015. He is currently directing the first edition of the LoboLab co-production event and is in the post-production phase of his directorial debut, Los territorios.

Mariana Pinheiro is a screenwriter and wrote the series Novela (Amazon Prime/Porta dos Fundos), directed by João Falcão, the podcasts Expectativas Delirantes, with Valen Bandeira (Audible), O Último Plano (G1) and A Nova Doença dos Brancos (Ethnographic Museum of Berlin/ISA), and was a collaborator on the feature film Canção ao Longe (Anavilhana) by Clarissa Campolina. She is currently writing the fiction feature film Garota da Urca with Marcelo Gomes (Matizar Filmes) and the documentary Serra de Fechados with Marília Rocha (Anavilhana), in addition to providing script consulting. She has researched authors and directors at TV Globo and participated in selection committees for BR Lab, FRAPA, FICA, Rio Film Festival, É Tudo Verdade and Curta Cinema, and in calls for proposals from the culture secretariats of RJ, SC, GO and SE.

He holds a postgraduate degree in Administration of Cultural and Creative Organizations from the University of Buenos Aires, a degree in Cinema from FAAP and a specialization in Psychoanalytic Semiotics from PUC-SP. He has worked in the production of films directed by Hector Babenco, Tizuka Yamasaki and Guilherme de Almeida Prado, and since 2002 has produced the International Film Festival in São Paulo. He has also had brief stints in theater and publishing, as well as in short documentaries. His short film Hibakusha: Herdeiros Atômicos no Brasil was one of the winners of the Prêmio Estímulo in 2005 and won an award at É Tudo Verdade in 2007.

Director of BrLab, producer, curator and founding partner of the production company Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual. He has worked as a programmer in cultural spaces such as MIS-SP, Cinemateca Brasileira and Cine Olido, in addition to having produced and programmed numerous exhibitions and festivals. He works as a coordinator of courses and training platforms, such as the Prodav 04 Project Development Laboratories for ANCINE/FSA, in addition to BrLab, which he created and has directed since 2011. Through Klaxon, he produced and co-produced the films Sobre Rodas (2017), by Mauro D’Addio; Diz a Ela que me Viu Chorar (2019), by Maíra Bühler; and co-produced the films Contactado (2020), by Marité Ugás; Fiebre (2022), by Elisa Eliash, Zafari (2024), by Mariana Rondón, among others.

His work includes La Invención de las Especies, directed by Tania Hermida (Ecuador), winner of the Sloan Science on Screen Award in 2024; The Count, directed by Pablo Larraín (Chile), winner of the Golden Lion in the category of Best Screenplay in 2023; and Una Mujer Fantástica, directed by Sebastián Lelio (Chile), awarded the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay in 2017 and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2018.

From her production company Tic Tac she directed: “Polvo” (Julio Hernández Cordón, 2012), “Tralas luces” (Sandra Sánchez, 2011), “18 comidas” (Jorge Coira, 2010) and “¿Qué culpa tiene el tomate?” (ómnibus, 2009). She has also co-produced feature films such as “Agua fría de mar” (Paz Fábrega, 2010), among other titles. In 2014 she founded Setembro Cine, through which she co-produced internationally recognized films: “Neruda” (Pablo Larraín, 2016), “Princesita” (Marialy Rivas, 2017) and “Una mujer fantasia” (Sebastián Lelio, 2017). He is currently involved in the development of the next film by Dutch director Joost Van Ginkel.

She has been working in the film marketing market since 2007. She has a degree in cinema and participated in the international distribution programs CICAE Training and Berlinale Talent Campus. She worked as a programmer at Cine Belas Artes, as acquisitions director at Pandora Filmes, and worked at the marketing agency Pipoca Digital. In 2017, she took over as content director at Elo Company, where she is responsible for curating and negotiating projects and content, and coordinating the ELAS Seal – a consultancy firm that promotes Brazilian feature films directed by women. She teaches the course The Film Distribution Market, which has had more than 15 classes and 100 students, and is a member of the collective ASAS.BR.COM.

Born in 1944. British actress and eldest daughter of Charles Chaplin and Oona O’Neill, she was eight years old when her family moved from the United States to Switzerland. She was first seen on screen when her father cast her in the film Limelight. Her first credited role was in Jacques Deray’s The Ransom, and international fame came with David Lean’s Doctor Zhivago. She developed an important collaboration with the Spaniard Carlos Saura. She worked on more than 140 films and television productions.

Film producer, founder and former president of the Chilean Academy of Cinematographic Arts, and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as tutor and panelist at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals. Specialized in international co-productions, he has worked with 15 countries on more than 20 films through Quijote Films. She is a director, producer and founder of Preta Portê Filmes. She graduated in Cinema from FAAP and EICTV in Cuba and directed the short film “Cores e botas”, which was shown worldwide in more than 50 festivals. As a guest director, she was part of the Berlinale Talents group (2015) at the Berlin Festival, the same year she was awarded with the co-production “A Terra e a sombra” at the Cannes Festival. In 2016, she was awarded the Rumos Itaú Cultural grant for the production of the film “Diálogos com Ruth de Souza”, currently in production, and is developing the script for her first feature film, “Cores de maio”, which was awarded the Spcine Doctoring grant and participated in BrLab 2017. On TV, in 2017 she launched the documentary series “Afronta!”, in partnership with Canal Futura and directed the 13th season of the series “Espelho”, by Lázaro Ramos, shown on Canal Brasil.

Since 1989, she has held various positions at VideoFilmes, an independent production company created by Walter and João Salles. In 2011, she became an executive producer at the company, and produced projects such as Últimas conversações, the latest documentary by Eduardo Coutinho, and Paulina, by Santiago Mitre, a Brazil-Argentina co-production that won the FIPRESCI award at Cannes in 2015. She was also the executive producer of Walter Salles’ latest project, Jia Zhangke, a man from Fenyang, shown at the Berlinale. The documentary was released in Brazil in September 2015 and will be released internationally through the French distributor MK2.

A Brazilian, he founded the production company FiGa Films in Los Angeles in 2006 with Alex Garcia to discover and distribute Latin American content in North America, as well as represent it around the world. He studied film at FAAP and the New School in New York, where he lived for 14 years, moving to California in 2001. He has worked at Film Forum, Universal and First Look Films. He was a programmer at the Latino Film Festival in Atlanta and artistic director of the IndieBrazil Film Festival in Los Angeles. He has been a speaker and jury member at Sundance, San Sebastián, Cannes, Rotterdam and other festivals. Since 2010 he has been a producer on projects such as “Verano de Goliat”, “Los viejos” and “Avanti Popolo”.

He holds a degree in Cinema and Contemporary Literature. Through Les Films du Sémaphores, he has distributed films by Pedro Almodóvar, Youssef Chahine and Emir Kusturica, among others. He has worked as an independent press agent for over 150 titles. He co-founded the Cinemed Film Festival in Montpellier and founded the Amiens Script Development Fund and Final Cut in Venice. In 2001, Thierry founded Ciné-Sud Promotion, a company dedicated to promoting arthouse films, which has produced 30 films that have won over 200 international awards.
