BrLab – 3rd Edition

3rd Edition

BrLab held its third edition in October of 2013, and for the first time, it took place as part of the activities of the São Paulo International Film Festival.

In partnership with the Associação do Audiovisual (presided over by Francisco Cesar Filho) and the São Paulo International Film Festival (directed by Renata de Almeida), the 3rd edition of BrLab was produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator. It had co-realization through the incentive of the Audiovisual Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture and the São Paulo International Film Festival.

It also featured the traditional partnerships of institutions such as Bolivia Lab, the Central American Cinema Support Fund Cinergia, FiGa Films, Vitrine Filmes, Centro Cultural b_arco, and Cinema do Brasil.

12 projects were selected, representing Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Peru.

Over a period of seven days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.

Attendees as tutors and project mentors included Uruguayan consultant and producer Agustina Chiarino, Cuban consultant and screenwriter Eliseo Altunaga, Chilean programmer Erick González, consultant and curator Eva Morsch-Khin, Argentine producer Fernanda del Nido, Brazilian consultant and producer Fernanda de Capua, Argentine filmmaker and producer Juan Villegas, Italian producer Rosanna Seregni, and Argentine producer Veronica Cura.

There were also talks given by Breno Betatti, Mariana Rondón, Marité Ugas, Micaela Cajahuaringa, Nadia Dresti, Sandro Fiorin, and Silvia Cruz.

Mariana Pinheiro is a screenwriter and wrote the series Novela (Amazon Prime/Porta dos Fundos), directed by João Falcão, the podcasts Expectativas Delirantes, with Valen Bandeira (Audible), O Último Plano (G1) and A Nova Doença dos Brancos (Ethnographic Museum of Berlin/ISA), and was a collaborator on the feature film Canção ao Longe (Anavilhana) by Clarissa Campolina. She is currently writing the fiction feature film Garota da Urca with Marcelo Gomes (Matizar Filmes) and the documentary Serra de Fechados with Marília Rocha (Anavilhana), in addition to providing script consulting. She has researched authors and directors at TV Globo and participated in selection committees for BR Lab, FRAPA, FICA, Rio Film Festival, É Tudo Verdade and Curta Cinema, and in calls for proposals from the culture secretariats of RJ, SC, GO and SE.

Director of BrLab, producer, curator and founding partner of the production company Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual. He has worked as a programmer in cultural spaces such as MIS-SP, Cinemateca Brasileira and Cine Olido, in addition to having produced and programmed numerous exhibitions and festivals. He works as a coordinator of courses and training platforms, such as the Prodav 04 Project Development Laboratories for ANCINE/FSA, in addition to BrLab, which he created and has directed since 2011. Through Klaxon, he produced and co-produced the films Sobre Rodas (2017), by Mauro D’Addio; Diz a Ela que me Viu Chorar (2019), by Maíra Bühler; and co-produced the films Contactado (2020), by Marité Ugás; Fiebre (2022), by Elisa Eliash, Zafari (2024), by Mariana Rondón, among others.

His work includes La Invención de las Especies, directed by Tania Hermida (Ecuador), winner of the Sloan Science on Screen Award in 2024; The Count, directed by Pablo Larraín (Chile), winner of the Golden Lion in the category of Best Screenplay in 2023; and Una Mujer Fantástica, directed by Sebastián Lelio (Chile), awarded the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay in 2017 and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2018.

Director of Australab, a platform that, among other initiatives, includes 3 Puertos Cine, in addition to developing actions to reflect on the circulation of independent cinema, such as the Industry Academy Chile-Locarno. For seven years, he was the programming director of the Toulouse Latin American Film Festival and a member of the selection committee of Cine en Construcción for the Toulouse and San Sebastián editions. He was also a programmer at FIC-Valdivia and, in addition, is a project delegate at the Center for Cinema and Creation, a space for promoting independent cinema in Chile.

Curator and consultant in the audiovisual industry, she is the coordinator of the programming and professional platform Cinema em Construção at the French festival Cinélatino Rencontres de Toulouse. Since 2013, she has been an international consultant for the Gap Financing Market in Venice, and since 2016 she has collaborated with the Marché du Film and Ventana Sur, forming part of the selection committee for Primer Corte and Copia Final. She developed and coordinated the professional activities of La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde in Cannes and has participated in selective support bodies such as Aide aux Cinémas du Monde and Proimagenes.

Fernanda De Capua created and directed the sitcom Insustentáveis, wrote the screenplays for the series A História Delas and Turma da Mônica – Origens, and the feature films A Suspeita and Virtuosas. She was a consultant for the scripts for Saudade Fez Morada Aqui Dentro, Gabriel e a Montanha, and for more than 20 projects in the Prodav 04 labs. Among her achievements as a producer, the films Sonhos de Peixe, Casa Grande and Quem Matou Eloá stand out.

Born in Buenos Aires, she developed her professional career in Spain. From her production company Tic Tac she directed: “Polvo” (Julio Hernández Cordón, 2012), “Tralas luces” (Sandra Sánchez, 2011), “18 comidas” (Jorge Coira, 2010) and “¿Qué culpa tiene el tomate?” (ómnibus, 2009). She has also co-produced feature films such as “Agua fría de mar” (Paz Fábrega, 2010), among other titles. In 2014 she founded Setembro Cine, through which she co-produced internationally recognized films: “Neruda” (Pablo Larraín, 2016), “Princesita” (Marialy Rivas, 2017) and “Una mujer fantasia” (Sebastián Lelio, 2017). He is currently involved in the development of the next film by Dutch director Joost Van Ginkel.

Founder of the Sintra production company, Rosanna Seregni has always been committed to producing and producing high-quality cinema. Born in 1972, Veronica Cura studied at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires and from 1992 onwards developed a career in film as a producer, executive producer, production director and teacher. As a producer, she made Las Acacias by Pablo Giorgelli (Caméra d’Or, Cannes 2011), La Mujer sin cabeza by Lucrecia Martel, El Otro by Ariel Rotter (Silver Bear for Best Actor and Grand Jury Prize, Berlinale 2006), Cama adentro by Jorge Gagger (Special Jury Prize, Sundance 2005), Un Amor by Paula Hernandez, Muerte en Buenos Aires by Natalia Meta, among others. Providing production services and as executive producer and production director, she has produced El Inventor de juegos by Juan Pablo Buscarini, There be dragons by Roland Joffe, And soon the darkness by Marcos Efron, Hide by KC Bascombe, Torrente 3 by Santiago Segura, among others. She has been teaching at ENERC (Argentine School of Cinematographic Experimentation) since 2005 and has been the academic coordinator of the production chair since 2011. She has also taught production seminars at EICTV and produced several seminars and workshops on production direction and executive production in different Latin American countries.

He is the producer of the feature films El Cielo La Tierra y La Lluvia (2008), Ilusiones Opticas (2009), Huacho (2009), Manuel de Ribeira (2010), Bonsai (2011), Il Futuro (2013) and The Summer of Flying Fish (2013). He holds a degree in Philosophy, is an audiovisual project consultant and director of the Valdivia International Film Festival (2010-2013). He has been a speaker at Typa, BoliviaLab, Eave Puentes, among others; he has also been a speaker in 13 Chilean cities with the purpose of training new audiovisual producers throughout Chile. He is a member of Eurodoc 2011 and also of Ace-Producers since 2009.

Her film “Pelo Malo” (2013) won the Concha de Oro at the San Sebastián Film Festival and 44 other awards at festivals such as Thessaloniki, Torino and Mar del Plata. She also directed “Postales de Leningrado” (2007) and “A la Media Noche y Media” (1999). She was invited to the MacDowell Colony and Rockefeller Foundation/The Bellagio Center residencies with her next project, Zafari. She produced “El Chico que Miente”, which premiered in the Generation section of the Berlin Film Festival in 2011, and “Contactado”, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020, both directed by Marité Ugas. In Visual Arts, she works with robotics and electronic art.

Born in Lima, Peru. After graduating in Communications from the University of Lima, she joined the first generation of EICTV in Cuba, where she directed, among other productions, Barrio Belen, a documentary about the port of Havana that won awards in Helsinki, Paris and Rome. Her first short films already showed her personal style and rhythm, such as Algo caia en el silencio and Cotidiano, which won awards in New York, Bilbao, Maryland and Rome. In 1991, she founded her company, Sudaca Films, based in Caracas, where she works as a director, producer, editor and screenwriter. Her first feature film, A la media noche y media (co-directed with Mariana Rondón), was shown at more than 40 international festivals, including Tokyo, Rotterdam and Seattle. As a producer and editor, she released Postcards from Leningrad in 2007, which won 23 international awards. El Chico que miente, his second feature film, was supported by CNAC (National Autonomous Center for Cinematography of Venezuela), Ibermedia, and EDD-Germany.

She is a Peruvian cinematographer who lives in Fortaleza, where she works independently on feature-length fiction and documentary films. Cajahuaringa has directed photography and camera work on feature-length films produced by Sudaca Films, for which she has won international awards for Best Camera and Best Cinematography. She has worked primarily on Peruvian feature-length films, with directors such as Francisco Lombardi, Fabrizio Aguilar, Alvaro Velarde and Ronnie Temoche, among others. She graduated from the University of Lima and, during her third year of college in 1986, won a scholarship to study at the newly created EICTV in Cuba. She specialized in Cinematography, taking workshops with filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Ricardo Aronovich and Cesar Charlone. Feeling the need to complement his cinematography and delve deeper into the visual arts in order to achieve a more comprehensive visual language, she studied for three years at the Corriente Alterna School of Fine Arts and, in 2003, specialized in technology at the Corcoran School of Arts in Washington. In 2003, she returned to EICTV as a professor and head of the Photography department until July 2006. In Fortaleza, she worked with filmmaker Marcus Moura as the cinematographer for her documentaries. She is currently filming the documentary Imburana.

She began her career in film in 1984 at the Locarno Film Festival. In 1988, she joined 20th Century Fox-Columbia TriStar in Geneva as marketing director for Switzerland. In 1990, she founded her own company specializing in promotions. In 1998, she began working with the Marché du Film de Cannes and the European Film Market at the Berlinale. She became a member of the selection committee of the Locarno Film Festival, was appointed head of the Industry Office, and participated in the launch of Open Doors, the festival’s co-production workshop. In 2006, Nadia Dresti was appointed artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, and in 2013 she also became director of the festival’s international area. She is a member of the Federal Film Commission of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.

A Brazilian, he founded the production company FiGa Films in Los Angeles in 2006 with Alex Garcia to discover and distribute Latin American content in North America, as well as represent it around the world. He studied film at FAAP and the New School in New York, where he lived for 14 years, moving to California in 2001. He has worked at Film Forum, Universal and First Look Films. He was a programmer at the Latino Film Festival in Atlanta and artistic director of the IndieBrazil Film Festival in Los Angeles. He has been a speaker and jury member at Sundance, San Sebastián, Cannes, Rotterdam and other festivals. Since 2010 he has been a producer on projects such as “Verano de Goliat”, “Los viejos” and “Avanti Popolo”.

She holds a degree in Business Administration from ESPM and worked at the independent distributor Pandora Filmes, contributing to the creation of the Cineclube do Belas Artes. She produced the project “Vá ao Cinema”, which screened more than 20 national films in the state of São Paulo. She worked at the distributor Europa Filmes, releasing national films, and at the production company Coração da Selva, as an executive producer. In 2010, she founded Vitrine Filmes, distributing more than 100 titles, such as “O som ao próximo”, “Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho” and “Aquarius”. In 2011, she started the Sessão Vitrine project, which has received support from Petrobras since 2016 and has released 30 films to date.
