BrLab held its eleventh edition in October of 2021, with its program realized online as a safety measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This edition included the event’s traditional workshops and meetings – BrLab Features, BrLab Audience Design, Locarno Industry Academy, BrPlot, and Reach.
In addition to these, we had two new categories:
1. CoLab, the first Latin American Audiovisual Labs Meeting, which brought together managers from approximately 30 labs from Latin America and Spain.
2. CoPro, a co-production meeting for projects in advanced stages of development and funding.
The 11th edition of BrLab was sponsored by the Programa Ibermedia, Projeto Paradiso, Spcine, and the Secretary of Culture of the Prefecture of the City of São Paulo, and it was produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator.
It had the master support of Vitrine Filmes and Globo Filmes, and the institutional support of the French Embassy in Brazil and the British Government in Brazil.
It also had partners such as comKids, Cesnik, Quintino, Salinas, Fittipaldi and Valério Advogados, collective C/as4atro, collective DAFB, Locarno International Film Festival, Torino Film Lab, Festival Rencontres Cinémas d’Amérique Latine de Toulouse (Cinéma en Développement), Pop Up Film Residency, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, Show me the Fund. And it had the collaboration of ABRA, APAN, API, BRAVI, Brazilian Content, Cinema do Brasil, SIAESP and UPEX.
12 projects were selected, representing Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Venezuela.
Over a period of twenty-two days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.
Attendees included Brazilian screenwriter and consultant Iana Cossoy Paro, Brazilian curator and producer Tatiana Leite, Cuban consultant and screenwriter Xenia Rivery, French producer Juliette Lepoutre, and Chilean producer Giancarlo Nasi, in addition to filmmakers Mariana Rondón, from Venezuela, and Paula Astorga, from Mexico.
There were also talks given by Gerardo Michelin, Juliette Lepoutre, and Marina Tarabay, among others.
This edition featured several awards for the participants, such as: Globo Filmes and Vitrine Filmes Development Award, Vitrine Filmes Distribution Award, Cinéma en Développement Award, Pop Up Film Residency, TFL Next Award, CQS Award, C/as4atro Award, DAFB Film Consulting Award, and Paradiso Award.
