About
BrLab is an annual market event held for the training of film professionals and the development and integration of Ibero-American cinema. It supports film projects throughout their different stages of creation and production, from their initial ideas to their eventual distribution.
Founded in 2011, BrLab is produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and directed by the Brazilian film producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, who is also the event’s creator.
It was the first event of its kind in Brazil to bring together local and international professionals with the goal of fostering greater creative and economic integration of the country with its geographical surroundings.
BrLab receives projects from all over Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, and it promotes different workshops on themes such as development, editing, and audience design labs, as well as international co-production meetings in order to connect film professionals from different countries and create links within the audiovisual production chain.
It is a unique space in Brazil, one where selected talents can work on their projects intensively within an immersive environment and in close contact with mentors and guest speakers.
BrLab has always been connected to the issues and needs of the sector, and over time it has expanded the scope of its activities and created new sections and categories within itself in order to fill gaps in professional understanding and accelerate the development of talents and of their projects.
In addition to the specific work focused on the projects and professionals involved with them (selected through public calls), each year BrLab welcomes a growing local audience that participates in the activities that are open to the public.
Panels and discussions from the event are made available online, a gesture that facilitates access for different audiences, including ones from other cities and states inside Brazil.
Currently, BrLab features the following sections in its program:
Workshops:
- BrLab Features – aimed at the development of selected feature-length narrative (fiction) projects; open for submissions from all of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.
- BrLab Audience Design – focused on the audience design (strategizing and outreach) of projects selected through open submissions from all of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.
- BrLab Rough Cut – aimed at films in the midst of their editing process, which are selected through open submissions from all of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.
- BrLab Kids – a lab created in 2025 for projects aimed at children and young audiences, as well as for audience development, to be held in the Brazilian city of Recife.
Meetings, talks and screenings:
- BrLab CoPro – international co-production meeting for Ibero-American projects from Brazil and other countries in the region whose teams are interested in participating in international co-productions.
- BrPlot – Screenwriters’ Meeting – a program pillar that promotes panels, talks, and discussions open to the public, all of which focus on screenwriting and writing for audiovisual media and on the screenwriters’ market as it exists within Brazil, Latin America, and the Iberian Peninsula.
- Reach – Questions of Audience – a program pillar that promotes panels, talks, and discussions open to the public, all of which reflect on the impact of innovative technologies and experiences on the circulation, distribution, and audience design of audiovisual projects.
- BrLab Film Showcase – a film showcase held in celebration of BrLab’s 15th anniversary, which will exist in the form of a curated retrospective of films that have participated in the various workshops promoted by BrLab during recent years, including special screenings with guests and public talkbacks to be realized in different venues and in cities throughout Brazil.
In addition to its main event in São Paulo, BrLab also promotes on-demand activities in different states in Brazil.
Over its fifteen years of uninterrupted activities, which have included an accumulation of successful cases of films released both in Brazil and abroad, BrLab has consolidated itself as an international reference point among the main platforms, labs, and similar training and market initiatives that exist outside the country.
