BrLab – 4th Edition

4th Edition

BrLab held its fourth edition in 2014. This edition included the event’s traditional workshop – BrLab Features.

The 4th edition of BrLab was sponsored by the Secretary of Culture of the Prefecture of the City of São Paulo and produced by Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual and Spcine, and directed by producer and curator Rafael Sampaio, the event’s creator, with co-realization by the São Paulo International Film Festival and the Programa Ibermedia.

It had the support of Cinergia, Vitrine Filmes, FiGa/Br, Latam Cinema, the Cinemateca Brasileira, Recam, Cine Latino, Cinéma en Développement, Cinema do Brasil, Inspiratorium – Film School, and the Secretariat of Culture of the Government of the State of São Paulo.

16 projects were selected, representing Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay.

Over a period of seven days, representatives of the selected projects had access to consultations on their scripts and productions with internationally renowned film specialists.

Attendees included Cuban consultant and screenwriter Eliseo Altunaga, director, screenwriter, and producer Fernanda de Capua, director and screenwriter Juliana Rojas, and producer Sara Silveira, among others.

There were also talks given by Daniel Ribeiro, Gabriel Mascaro, and José Agripino, among others.

Estrela Straus is a Brazilian actress and director. She studied film at FAAP, in Brazil; at EICTV, in Cuba; and at Universidad del Cine, in Argentina. As an actress, she graduated from the Lee Strasberg Film and Theatre Institute in New York; at CPT, in São Paulo; and with Augusto Fernandes and Agustín Alezzo, in Buenos Aires. She studied dramaturgy with Mauricio Kartun. She was a teacher at Teatro Escola Célia Helena. She acted in plays, short films and series in Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Germany and the United States. She directed the plays Fracture, in Berlin, and Vanities, in New York. She directed the short films My favorite things or Liberdade and Fim.

Curator and consultant in the audiovisual industry, she is the coordinator of the programming and professional platform Cinema em Construção at the French festival Cinélatino Rencontres de Toulouse. Since 2013, she has been an international consultant for the Gap Financing Market in Venice, and since 2016 she has collaborated with the Marché du Film and Ventana Sur, forming part of the selection committee for Primer Corte and Copia Final. She developed and coordinated the professional activities of La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde in Cannes and has participated in selective support bodies such as Aide aux Cinémas du Monde and Proimagenes.

Flavia Candida is a curator, filmmaker, and producer who graduated from the Cinema course at UFF (Federal Fluminense University), where she directed the short film O Metro Quadrado, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 35th Brasília Film Festival.

She began as a programmer in the late 1990s at Cine Arte UFF and coordinated the Brazilian University Film Festival for over 15 years.

She collaborates in the curation of festivals such as the Rio Film Festival, Vitória Film Festival, Brasília Film Festival, Zózimo Bulbul Black Cinema Meeting, São Paulo International Short Film Festival, and Mate Com Angu Festival. She also curated the Cabíria Festival Mulheres & Audiovisual and FIMCine 23, both dedicated to female protagonism.

She has produced exhibitions such as Arte da África Cinema and Pequenas Histórias da Vanguarda – Downtown New York. She selects projects for labs such as BrLab, ICUMAM Lab, and the Curta Cinema Project Lab, and was a tutor at Roteiros do Arrabalde. She was on the selection committee for the Göteborg Film Fund 2021.

As a filmmaker and editor, his work has been screened and awarded in Brazil and internationally. He holds a degree in Cinema from ECA-USP and has also served as a juror on selection and award committees, representing Kinoforum at various events in Brazil, France, Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Mariana Pinheiro is a screenwriter and wrote the series Novela (Amazon Prime/Porta dos Fundos), directed by João Falcão, the podcasts Expectativas Delirantes, with Valen Bandeira (Audible), O Último Plano (G1) and A Nova Doença dos Brancos (Ethnographic Museum of Berlin/ISA), and was a collaborator on the feature film Canção ao Longe (Anavilhana) by Clarissa Campolina. She is currently writing the fiction feature film Garota da Urca with Marcelo Gomes (Matizar Filmes) and the documentary Serra de Fechados with Marília Rocha (Anavilhana), in addition to providing script consulting. She has researched authors and directors at TV Globo and participated in selection committees for BR Lab, FRAPA, FICA, Rio Film Festival, É Tudo Verdade and Curta Cinema, and in calls for proposals from the culture secretariats of RJ, SC, GO and SE.

Director of BrLab, producer, curator and founding partner of the production company Klaxon Cultura Audiovisual. He has worked as a programmer in cultural spaces such as MIS-SP, Cinemateca Brasileira and Cine Olido, in addition to having produced and programmed numerous exhibitions and festivals. He works as a coordinator of courses and training platforms, such as the Prodav 04 Project Development Laboratories for ANCINE/FSA, in addition to BrLab, which he created and has directed since 2011. Through Klaxon, he produced and co-produced the films Sobre Rodas (2017), by Mauro D’Addio; Diz a Ela que me Viu Chorar (2019), by Maíra Bühler; and co-produced the films Contactado (2020), by Marité Ugás; Fiebre (2022), by Elisa Eliash, Zafari (2024), by Mariana Rondón, among others.

Director of Australab, a platform that, among other initiatives, includes 3 Puertos Cine, in addition to developing actions to reflect on the circulation of independent cinema, such as the Industry Academy Chile-Locarno. For seven years, he was the programming director of the Toulouse Latin American Film Festival and a member of the selection committee of Cine en Construcción for the Toulouse and San Sebastián editions. He was also a programmer at FIC-Valdivia and, in addition, is a project delegate at the Center for Cinema and Creation, a space for promoting independent cinema in Chile.

Born in 1972, Veronica Cura studied at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires and from 1992 onwards developed a career in film as a producer, executive producer, production director and teacher. As a producer, she made Las Acacias by Pablo Giorgelli (Caméra d’Or, Cannes 2011), La Mujer sin cabeza by Lucrecia Martel, El Otro by Ariel Rotter (Silver Bear for Best Actor and Grand Jury Prize, Berlinale 2006), Cama adentro by Jorge Gagger (Special Jury Prize, Sundance 2005), Un Amor by Paula Hernandez, Muerte en Buenos Aires by Natalia Meta, among others. Albertina Carri is a pivotal figure in contemporary Latin American cinema. She is known for her versatility in the genres and materials she explores. She has directed the films No quiero volver a casa, Los rubios, Géminis, La rabia, Cuatreros, Las hijas del fuego, and ¡Caigan las rosas blancas!, which have been screened at the Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Venice, San Sebastián, and Rotterdam film festivals, among many others. Carri’s work evolves as she develops her themes, resources, and methods. She reorganizes film footage, immersing herself in the power of sound and movement in audiovisual installations such as Cine puro, Punto impropio, and Animales puros. She also incorporates writing into her work, both poetry and prose. She has published Los rubios: Cartografía de una película, Retratos ciegos, Lo que aprendí de las bestias, Las poseas, and Cine vivo.

An artist and filmmaker, his work has been screened and exhibited at festivals and exhibitions such as the Berlin, Sundance, Locarno, Toronto, Venice, IDFA, Rotterdam, Oberhausen, São Paulo Biennial, Videobrasil, MACBA and MoMA. He received the Fênix Award for Best Ibero-American Screenplay for Boi Neon (2015), which was also among the New York Times Top 10 Best Films in 2016. On the visual arts circuit, in 2015, he was nominated for the PIPA Prize. His films have won more than 50 international awards and, in 2016, Mascaro had a retrospective at the Lincoln Center in New York.

José Agripino is a director, screenwriter and audiovisual producer, with a degree in Audiovisual from Senac. He worked for three years as a producer for In-Edit – International Music Documentary Festival, and currently works as a digital communications strategist for film and television. He was co-responsible for the online promotion strategy for the release of the films Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho, by Daniel Ribeiro, and O mercado de notícias, by Jorge Furtado. He directed the short films Poliamor and Leve-me pra sair, which together were seen by more than 1.2 million people on the web. He is currently part of Lumika, a content production collective for young audiences.

He studied art history, film, television and anthropology. He is a film critic and the author of almost 20 books on film. In the 1980s, he co-founded a production company focused on German TV programmes, such as Voice of Germany. Later, Meinolf Zurhorst co-founded a production company that also works in post-production. He co-wrote and directed several documentaries, the two most successful of which were about two German actors, Götz George and Mario Adorf. In the 1990s, he began working as a commissioning editor in the film department of the TV channel ARTE, eventually becoming its director. In 2000, he became head of the ARTE/ZDF department, which he led until recently, when he became head of the fiction department at ARTE/ZDF. He has been a consultant for EAVE and ACE, and has served as a juror at several international festivals.

A Brazilian, he founded the production company FiGa Films in Los Angeles in 2006 with Alex Garcia to discover and distribute Latin American content in North America, as well as represent it around the world. He studied film at FAAP and the New School in New York, where he lived for 14 years, moving to California in 2001. He has worked at Film Forum, Universal and First Look Films. He was a programmer at the Latino Film Festival in Atlanta and artistic director of the IndieBrazil Film Festival in Los Angeles. He has been a speaker and jury member at Sundance, San Sebastián, Cannes, Rotterdam and other festivals. Since 2010 he has been a producer on projects such as “Verano de Goliat”, “Los viejos” and “Avanti Popolo”.

She holds a degree in Business Administration from ESPM and worked at the independent distributor Pandora Filmes, contributing to the creation of the Cineclube do Belas Artes. She produced the project “Vá ao Cinema”, which screened more than 20 national films in the state of São Paulo. She worked at the distributor Europa Filmes, releasing national films, and at the production company Coração da Selva, as an executive producer. In 2010, she founded Vitrine Filmes, distributing more than 100 titles, such as “O som ao próximo”, “Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho” and “Aquarius”. In 2011, she started the Sessão Vitrine project, which has received support from Petrobras since 2016 and has released 30 films to date.
