On the slope of the Cayambe volcano, the first major indigenous strike begins. Thousands of unionized wasipungueros demand payment, fair treatment and rest from the “bosses”, who force them to live on small pieces of unproductive land, which they have to pay for with forced and inhumane labor. The employers flatly refuse to accept these conditions, and forcefully demand, together with the military and government authorities, that they return to work. At the head of the wasipungueros is a 45-year-old illiterate woman: Dolores Cacuango, who despite the death of several children, carries the destiny of being a leader, woman and mother alone. This story is inspired by her inner struggle in trying to accept this fate.
