Spcine presentation

2016
In order to fund and support the development of young professionals in the city of São Paulo’s audiovisual sector, BrLab – in partnership with Spcine, a municipal company promoting the development and sustainability of the audiovisual industry – created a new training space focused on the qualification of professionals.
The program is based on the assumption that the producer’s role is more than just a set of bureaucratic or administrative tasks; it is also a type of “creative management”, as it involves writing, directing, dramaturgy and artistic skills. A production committed to project development is an indispensable condition for the success of most audiovisual works.
Aimed at professionals starting their careers, LAB Spcine - BrLab’s introductory activity – as participants will have access and be able to follow the laboratory’s production activities as audit students – will address projects’ professional possibilities in the international market, from the development stage up to distribution.
The program includes lectures and activities in which leading professionals in the Brazilian and international markets share their experiences based on case studies. Producer Leonardo Mecchi and BrLab Director Rafael Sampaio are responsible for the coordination of the course, with support from Spcine’s International Coordination team.

ROUND TABLES
7 PM
Centro de Pesquisa e Formação do Sesc - SP
A filmmaking process involving more than one co-producer country usually requires a production design that complies with the laws and rules set forth in international (bilateral or multilateral) agreements, as well as Brazilian rules that regulate international audiovisual co-productions. Often used for film financing, production and/or post- production, co-production mechanisms must be assessed and incorporated as early as during the development phase of an audiovisual project, provided that there is a real need and artistic justifications for this practice. Taking these points into consideration, the discussion will address the legal and practical aspects that must assessed – including pros and cons – by producers working on a co-production.

The distribution of on-demand audiovisual content has become the most solid distribution arm of the audiovisual industry in recent years. Users, platforms, youtubers: new formats and new ways to bring content close to its audience emerge daily. The industry creates business models and technology and marketing strategies that meet the demand for content, allowing the ample supply available to have guaranteed distribution and audience reach. How is the consolidation of this process taking shape in the market? What are the next steps?

As a script professor and consultant, Eliseo Altunaga is currently one of the most renowned professionals in the international arena. He is also the Script Department dean at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños - EICTV, and head associate professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Havana. In his master class – recommended for both professional and amateur writers – Eliseo will talk about the script structure and how it relates to the characters, a fundamentally important aspect of the scriptwriting and development process.

A conversation with Altunaga is a class about screenwriting, film, life and cultural connections. His classes are always crowded with students, with other professors, all plunged into the rhythm of his words. Furious, irreverent, accurate, permanent words. This book is the record of a series of conversations that we have had between 2009 and 2016, in different places: at his home in Havana, over coffee at the “El Rapidito” (the iconic EICTV’s cafeteria), at my place in Santiago, Chile, at hotels, cafes and meetings via Skype. And thus I went on capturing Eliseo’s words. Little by little. In fragments. For years. This is not a book on screenwriting, nor does it pretend to be. This is a book about one man’s passion for film, for scripts, for life. Eliseo Altunaga never brought any written material or anything prepared to our meetings. It is my hope that, when reading this book, readers feel like they are having a coffee with the Master, getting carried away by his words and the conceptual mazes of his universe full of wisdom, cinema and life.
