Building Niche Audiences in the Digital Environment

11 AM

Live broadcast

One of the most challenging subjects for the independent cinema industry in the past decade is the digital environment. With the arrival and consolidation of the internet, new platforms of streaming films were created and soon became giants in the industry, not only while exhibiting films and series, but also producing content. At the same time, piracy has rapidly become a window of exhibition for users seeking for content they don’t find in cinemas or the latest video stores. While Netflix, Amazon and others are widely spread and commonly recognized as synonyms of VOD, platforms such as MUBI are in the market for more than 10 years trying to create a space for independent arthouse cinema, and nowadays, more and more solutions are created based in niche audiences, such as Kabinett, Spamflix and many more.

How to create an environment for theatrical and VOD to co-exist in the new world (lessons we’ve learned)

4 PM

Live broadcast

Every exhibitor across the globe is dealing with the fallout of Covid-19 and the predominance of studio productions, which are rapidly being withdrawn from release schedules. As distributors pivot to look at their online and digital business, what can we do to attract customers to our bespoke platforms and how do we ensure the survival of arthouse films? During this discussion, Kate Gerova and Lee Shelton will look at the digital customer journey. We will focus on the application of user-centric design and the use of data in order to create product longevity. We will also explore how strategic partnerships with exhibitors and influencers can reach an audience who might feel starved of new content, as well as discuss how creative CRM, targeted social advertising, adwords and effective remarketing can ensure they return time and again.

Festivals: a Programmer’s Challenges

17h30

Live broadcast

The work of a festival programmer is often seen as a job that any cinephile would love to do – to discover films, create an identity through which a festival will present itself to a certain audience –, and festivals are definitely a space for the plurality of voices and artistic freedom. However, there are many challenges in the day-to-day of a programmer, not only in terms of the nature of the job itself (which is often a free-lance job, that must be combined with other works in the industry), but also in terms of the struggle to find new films and points of views, the need to deal with important matters such as representativeness, innovative ways of filming, new technologies etc. Anne Delseth, Susana Rodrigues e Cecilia Barrionuevo, three women with large experience in the field, will talk about these challenges. The professionals work as programmers at festivals such as Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, Rotterdam and Mar del Plata, among others.

Audience Design: the Exploration of Story and Audience Worlds

11 AM

Live broadcast

The master class will look at the practice of audience design, which can be defined as “the process of creating audience awareness and engagement around films from an early stage of development through a story-based and multi-angle approach”. As a practicing audience designer, Benjamin Cölle will talk about the theoretical foundations of this practice and discuss recent film projects as best-practice examples. This master class is for writers, directors, producers, distributors and all those film professionals who want to set out together to explore their stories and potential audiences through a collaborative and iteractive process (and artistic research practice) from an early stage of development.
