June 1917. Alzira is a black woman who has just moved to the outskirts of Curitiba with her family. Sebastião, her husband, got a job as a barrel maker in a factory in the city, taking his family away from rural work and throwing them into the dream of early twentieth-century urbanization. But there are two different cities for Alzira and Sebastião, who is white. And none of them are welcoming. When an unimaginable being attacks Alzira in the middle of the night, the news spreads rapidly, and Alzira is blamed for attracting all the ills of the world into the new community."
